Matt is currently a Philadelphia-based lighting designer and a projections artist who works in a diverse array of performance art including, theatre, dance, opera and instillation/environmental. Creating rich environments and distinct worlds with illuminated media is Matt’s favorite mode of artistic expression.
As a native of Denver, Colorado, Matt is a lover of all things outdoors and couldn’t be happier climbing a boulder or reading near a lake. As a young individual, Matt began his life in the arts as a performing artist. With a fascination for all aspects of performance and an insatiable need to understand all facets of his surroundings, Matt seemed to “fall” into lighting when one fateful day he volunteered to run the spotlight and fog machine.
Today, Matt works primarily as a Lighting designer for theatre and dance. Often using these mediums to explore new and alternative modes of illumination for performance and beyond. Matt has also found himself in a wide range of disciplines and odd jobs. Some favorites might include; designing scenery, and special effects, stage management, logistic coordinator for wet paint, dog wrangler, LED suit-maker, light bulb manager, and sardine master. Above all, Matt still loves to be the guy behind the fog machine.
Some official things; Matt studied at the University of the Arts in the Theatre Design and Technology program with a concentration in Lighting Design. Matt has spent the 2014 season at the Santa Fe Opera. Additionally Matt has worked with and trained at the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas in Nevada. Regionally Matt has designed and worked with The Arden Theatre Company, Brian Sander’s JUNK, The Wilma Theatre, Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Fringe Arts, Pennsylvania Ballet, The Adrienne Theatre, 11th Hour Theatre Co, Pig Iron Theatre, Koresh Dance Company, and Opera Philadelphia. Matt provides a professional and fun aesthetic to any production or team.
